from mine to metal

"Utterly inspiring fun!"

The FLAME project and the School of Archaeology put on an afternoon of metal at the Pitt Rivers Museum in June 2018!
Visitors learned about the origins of metal, experienced the processes of production, and found out what makes these materials so special. They were able to talk to experts about current research and consider how the importance of metals for human societies has changed over the last 10,000 years.
With interactive demonstrations, free activities, and museum trails it was an event for children and adults of all ages to enjoy!
This page provides access to some of the resources that we developed for the day our original flyers, posters (now being improved and developed into educational resources) and photos of the event.

The day consisted of:

Digging Deep
Mining experience (suitable for ages 3–10) and hands-on mineral display.

Making Metal
Smelting & casting demonstrations and talks.

Recycling Matters
Mini-exhibition, object handling sessions and make-and-take craft activities.

Exploring the Past
Archaeometallurgy in action! Hands on sessions with the history of archaeological science.

This event was funded by the University of Oxford PER Seed Fund, with support from:
